Barcelona Visit - Pattern & Texture

Recent trend shows are all talking about busy patterns and textures – and on a trip to Barcelona last month, there seemed to be pattern and texture everywhere I looked, from the pavements to the trees!

Pavements & treesBarcelona building patterns & texturesBarcelona was the home of the great Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudi, who was a master of pattern, form and texture.

No Noise

De-branded TinFrom this week until the end of February, Selfridges will be introducing a Quiet Shop as part of its No Noise retail initiative. No Noise celebrates the power of quiet in a society of information overload and finds calm amongst the crowds. Some of the world's most recognisable brands have worked with the initiative and have removed their logos to create a collection of de-branded products. Selfridges has also removed the logos from its yellow bags. See if you can recognise any of the products below without their logos, some are easier than others!

De-branded Jar         De-branded Headphones          De-branded JeansSelfridges will also be bringing their Silence Room back as part of the initiative to allow shoppers to "retire from the whirl of bargains and the build up of energy". The room was first introduced by Harry Gordon Selfridge in 1909. The room has been redesigned by architect Alex Cochrane and has an insulated inner-sanctum that shields the noise from human traffic in-store.

Crowning glory!

Mulberry CrownAs part of the Jubllee celebrations, Harrods have commissioned the creation of 31 stunning handmade crowns from famous designers around the world to be displayed in the windows of their Knightsbridge store, showcased in red and golden frames.

Great British fashion brands Paul Smith and Mulberry have created their own quirky versions, the Mulberry crown being ‘dipped’ in hundreds and thousands, inspired by this season’s ‘Candy’ colours, looking good enough to eat.

Nottingham’s own Paul Smith's crown is studded with retro jubilee badges and memorabilia buttons, topped with a cut-out corgi!

Paul Smith explained how they were all sent a basic steel crown as a starting point, he then looked around his own eclectic studio for inspiration. He wanted to create a crown that people would be fascinated to look at and discover new things each and every time they saw it.
Paul Smith Crown(I’m sure I used to have a silver jubilee badge like that… I'm going to have to try and dig it out!)

Cool Britannia!

Mr Kipling JubileeWith the Queen's Jubilee fast approaching, Britain is going to town with celebrations and some very British-themed products have appeared on the shelves.

I first spotted Mr Kipling 'French Fancies', sorry, I meant 'Great British Fancies'! The icing on the cakes has been changed from the usual pink, yellow and brown to red, white and blue. Mr Kipling have also brought out 'Victoria Mini Classics' and you can't have a tea party without a Victoria sponge! Cadbury's Mini Rolls have joined in the celebrations with a strawberry, blueberry and cream filling.
Ma'amiteMarmite's limited edition 'Ma'amite' is a very clever and subtle play on words - do you "love it or hate it"?

Weetabix 'Fuel Britannia'Some other well punned products are Nestlé's 'Brit Kat' rather than the 'Kit Kat' and Weetabix have played on 'Rule Britannia' with 'Fuel Britannia'.

Hovis, McVities and Soreen are just some of the many other brands who are jumping on the Jubilee British bandwagon.

Personally, I love it and shall be hosting a Jubilee 'Big Lunch' party myself on my street in June with lots of British paraphernalia filling the tables!

Team GB's 'winning' kit

Great Britain London 2012 KitLast week saw the unveiling of Team GB's London 2012 Olympic kit by adidas creative director Stella McCartney and various athletes taking part in this Summer's games. The design played on a redrawn Union Jack using indigo and various shades of blue with a clear absence of red in the flag itself. However, red has been used more sparingly on the collars, trim, socks and footwear of the kit instead. I am personally in favour of the way McCartney has gone against the obvious and tried to evolve the flag into something that is more on trend, but still retains its true identity of 'GB'. McCartney admitted that the kit was not a "radical fashion statement" but believes that the sportswear is a "chic piece of kit that will make the team look like a winning side".

The kit has somewhat predictably brought mixed reaction. A Telegraph online poll reported a 38.36% in favour of the kit and 61.64% against the design.

Whether you're a fan of the design or not, I'm sure every Brit in the land will be rooting for whichever athlete is wearing it come the 27th July.

Temporary Transformations

Temporary tattoos have come a long way since their early 1900’s debut as prizes in bubble gum wrappers and Cracker Jack® boxes. Advances in printing and technology over the past century have evolved these nostalgic cheap giveaways into a vehicle for artistic expression, and more recently, a fashion-forward makeup accessory.

I recently stumbled upon one of the latest additions to the temporary tattoo fashion craze…“Violent Lips” temporary lip tattoos. These statement-making lip patterns come in a variety of colors and designs. The product line offers many categories to choose from, including Animal Prints, Words and “Glitterati,” or you can opt for a Patriotic look with your nation’s flag. Each application lasts for up to 8 hours!

While most of the population will likely not adopt the Violent Lips line into their daily morning routine, the idea of a quick and long lasting makeup application is appealing to a large demographic. Similar products emerging in the market, such as Velvet Eyes, Eye Tattoo and Beauti-Full-Brows, are evidence that temporary tattoos have transformed from their original roots and claimed territory in a new retail space.
